Inspiration
RENÈ reflects a dual perspective shaped by the meeting of Asian and Scandinavian heritage. By bringing together Eastern sensibilities with Scandinavian restraint, we explore form, materiality, tradition, and innovation. Our aesthetic emphasizes oversized proportions, utilitarian details, relaxed fits, exaggerated silhouettes, and rustic, tactile textures. At the core of our practice lies a curiosity-driven engagement with craft, heritage, and culture.
Our research draws from historical and cultural references ranging from Nordic fishermen, rural communities, and classical paintings to Asian uniforms and landscapes. We study tools, textiles, ceramics, and furniture, observing how function, wear, and time transform objects. These observations inform our design process, allowing us to balance experimentation with a deep respect for materiality, longevity, and cultural context.
Materials
Choosing the right materials is essential to us, as well-made garments begin with the right fabric. We primarily work with deadstock textiles sourced from Denmark, Italy and Japan,
A significant portion of our materials comes from the Danish upholstery and textile companies Kvadrat and Sahco, which produce high-end textiles in collaboration with designers such as Patricia Urquiola and Raf Simons. These textiles are often available in limited quantities, making them ideal for special pieces within our collections.
To complement these materials and ensure consistency across full collections, we also source high-quality deadstock fabrics from renowned mills in Italy and Japan.
Prototyping
We create everything with intention, from the initial sketch to the final product. Each season, we develop our prototypes in our atelier in Vesterbro, Copenhagen. We begin by creating patterns using CAD software to refine the designs and minimise waste during the early stages.
The first physical prototypes are then cut and sewn in our studio. This hands-on process allows us to closely follow every step of development and maintain our standards for craftsmanship and well-constructed garments.
Production
Our garments are produced in Thailand in collaboration with local ateliers. We prioritise fair wages and safe working conditions, particularly supporting women in vulnerable situations.
At the same time, we work with highly skilled tailors and craftsmen who ensure that each garment meets the quality standards we have set. We have chosen Thailand as our production base because our co-founder has Thai roots and extensive experience working with local ateliers, tailors, and craftsmen, which enables us to maintain close and trusted relationships throughout the production process.
